Why every website needs the right favicon sizes
Browser tab & bookmarks
The 16×16 and 32×32 PNGs are what appears in your browser tab and when someone bookmarks your site. A missing favicon shows a blank grey square — making your site look unfinished and reducing trust.
iPhone & iPad home screen
When a visitor taps "Add to Home Screen" on iOS, Apple uses the 180×180 apple-touch-icon. Without it, iOS screenshots your page instead — blurry, unbranded and inconsistent across devices.
Android & PWA icons
Android Chrome and Progressive Web Apps use the 192×192 and 512×512 sizes defined in your site.webmanifest. These power the "Add to Home Screen" prompt and the splash screen when your app loads.
Frequently Asked Questions About Favicons
What image should I use for my favicon?
Use a square image with your logo mark or initials — ideally at least 512×512 pixels. Simple, bold shapes work best because favicons are displayed very small. Avoid fine detail, thin lines or text that is smaller than 20% of the icon's width, as these become unreadable at 16×16 and 32×32 px. A PNG with a transparent background or a solid background that matches your brand works well.
Do I still need a .ico file?
Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) all support PNG favicons linked with <link rel="icon">, so a .ico file is no longer required for modern browsers. However, some older versions of Internet Explorer (pre-IE11) only read favicon.ico placed in your root directory. If you need to support legacy browsers, you can use an online ICO converter to create one from your 32×32 PNG and place it at /favicon.ico.
What is a site.webmanifest and do I need one?
A site.webmanifest (also called a Web App Manifest) is a small JSON file that tells browsers your site's name, theme colour and icon locations. It's required for Android Chrome's "Add to Home Screen" prompt and for Progressive Web App (PWA) support. The ZIP this tool generates includes a ready-to-use site.webmanifest file pointing to the 192×192 and 512×512 icons.
My new favicon isn't showing — what's wrong?
Browsers cache favicons aggressively. To force a refresh, do a hard reload (Cmd+Shift+R on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows), or open the page in an Incognito/Private window. Some browsers may take up to 24 hours to update favicons in the address bar even after a hard reload — this is normal. If the favicon still doesn't show after clearing cache, double-check the file path in your <link> tag matches where the file is actually hosted.
Where do I upload the favicon files on my website?
Upload all files from the ZIP to the root of your website — the same folder as your index.html. The HTML snippet uses root-relative paths like /favicon-32x32.png, which means the files must be at yoursite.com/favicon-32x32.png. If you're using WordPress, upload to your theme's root or use a plugin like RealFaviconGenerator to handle placement automatically.
Is my image uploaded to your server?
No. This tool runs entirely inside your browser — your image never leaves your device. The resizing and ZIP creation all happen using browser APIs (Canvas and the JSZip library). Nothing is sent to any server.
