Why UTM tracking is non-negotiable for business
Stop guessing where ROI comes from
Without UTM tags, Google Analytics lumps all your campaign traffic into "Direct" or "Referral". You can't tell if your Facebook ad or your email newsletter drove a sale — so you can't cut what's not working.
Compare campaigns side by side
Tag every campaign from day one and you'll have clean data to compare — which email subject line drove more signups, which ad platform has the better CPA, which social post actually converts.
Works with any analytics platform
UTM parameters are the universal standard, recognised by Google Analytics 4, Plausible, Fathom, HubSpot, Klaviyo and every major CRM. Build the URL once, track everywhere.
UTM Parameter Reference
Each UTM parameter answers a specific question about where your traffic came from. The first three are required — without them the data is incomplete and hard to filter in reports.
Frequently Asked Questions About UTM Tracking
What are UTM parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are small snippets of text added to the end of a URL that tell analytics tools where a visitor came from. They were created by Urchin (later acquired by Google) and are now the universal standard for campaign tracking. When someone clicks a UTM-tagged link, the parameters are sent to your analytics platform and stored alongside their session data.
Will UTM parameters break my website or links?
No. UTM parameters are standard URL query strings that your website ignores entirely — they pass straight through to the analytics layer. Your pages load and function exactly as normal. The only thing that changes is what your analytics platform records about that visit.
Should I use uppercase or lowercase in UTM values?
Always use lowercase. Analytics platforms treat utm_source=Google and utm_source=google as two completely separate sources, splitting your data and making reports harder to read. The "auto-format" toggle in this tool lowercases all values automatically. Also replace spaces with underscores — spring_launch not spring launch.
Do I need UTM tags on all my links?
You need them on any link that comes from outside your website — ads, emails, social posts, influencer mentions, press coverage, partner links. You do NOT need them on internal links between your own pages (doing so resets the session source mid-visit and corrupts your data).
How do I view UTM data in Google Analytics 4?
In GA4, go to Reports → Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition. Your campaign data will appear under Session Source / Medium. You can also create a custom exploration report filtering by utm_campaign to compare specific campaigns side by side. Data only appears for visits that happened after you started using tagged links.
Can I use UTM tags with social media posts?
Yes — and you should. Paste the full UTM URL into your social post, email or ad destination field. Most platforms shorten the URL automatically for display, so users see a clean link but the tracking parameters are preserved. On Twitter/X, use the full URL in the link field even if it looks long — the platform wraps it with t.co automatically.
Tracking traffic is the start — converting it is the goal.
UTM data shows you where people come from. KadoshDev builds the landing pages and automation flows that turn that traffic into leads and sales.
